![]() ![]() ![]() With no clear direction on the genre to be made from either the top of Fox or Argonaut, Tim Moss designed an engine around a game that had just been released but was completely obsessed with: Loaded. The Moss brothers worked with a handful of other developers on a prototype based on this idea. At that point we called it AVP because that is what we thought the project was,” Dave Moss explains to SamaGame. “After finishing the work on Alien Odyssey I immediately started working on the graphic elements typical of Alien. Brothers Tim and Dave Moss, programmer and artist respectively, knew two things: it was based on the world of Aliens and it was made for Fox. When the pre-production of Resurrection began, a handful of Alien Odyssey team members were introduced to the new game project with no idea what it was going to be about. Argonaut was a disorganized company, a statement made by several staff members behind Resurrection, and no game could prove it more than this. Development began at an appropriate time in the film’s production but the game didn’t launch until in October 2000, three years after the debut of the film and with two versions less than those planned. Pre-production on Alien Resurrection kicked off in early 1996, shortly after the release of Alien Odyssey and the cancellation of the now released Star Fox 2. Jean-Pierre Jeunet’s vision of the franchise is undoubtedly a botched and ultimately weird directorial work (although it has its own fair share of hilarious horror moments) but the most interesting stories related to Resurrection are not about the movie but the videogame tie- in the same name developed by the British Argonaut team. From both a crowd and fan perspective, it seemed like nothing more than a shameless attempt to make money by bringing one of the film’s only (and best) female leads back to life for quick and easy income. November 1997 brought with it one of the most reviled films within the Alien franchise: Alien – The Cloning. For each Alien Isolation there is an AVP: Extinction, for each Aliens (the arcade game) there is an Aliens: Colonial Marines. In video games, Alien-based titles and its sequels also follow this swing in quality. In the movies we have the colossal peak of the original released in 1979 and the incredible banality of Alien vs Predator 2: Requiem. However, the Alien franchise is a roller coaster ride in quality. The Alien franchise has “haunted” everything. Movies, books, comics, video games, a board game and even action figures for children. In the 39 years that have passed since Ridley Scott’s immortal sci-fi-horror film burst through the f*****g walls of theaters, we’ve seen a steady stream of IP-related content in almost every form of media. Regardless of your age, you most likely know Alien. Behind the scenes of the development of Alien Resurrection for PSOne – article ![]()
